Tomorrow I begin the long trek home. It starts with a ferry from Langkawi to Penang. The next day it's an AirAsia flight from Penang to Bangkok, and the day after that it's a BA flight from Bangkok to London. Since all that is going to be less than relaxing I decided that today would be the day to do as little as possible and have a laze about day as I'm unlikely to have another one of those for quite a while.
Since this island is viewed primarily as a beach destination I decided I would conform and do exactly the sort of thing that everybody else does and go to the beach.
Getting there, some 25km from where I'm staying, involved a taxi as I certainly wasn't going to walk there. The island operates a fixed fares system so at least you know how much you'll pay to get to wherever it is you're going. In my case this turned out to be RM30, not bad for a 35-40 minute journey.
So basically my day was spent walking along the beach with its fine pristine sand although I was disappointed that you can't walk from one end to the other, some 5km, without interruption as various headlands and building development sites prevent this. I also spotted a rather fancy hotel complex that had a lone unoccupied lounger in the gardens that looked just right for me so several chapters of the Henning Mankell book I'm reading were finished reclining on said lounger, by which time it was definitely time to sample the local cuisine.
The taxi I managed to find for the return journey was not one that would pass an MOT test and there were times, as it struggled up some slight incline, when I felt that I'd have to get out to push, but I arrived safely back at base, only slightly later than expected.
That was supposed to be the sum total of my strenuous day, but there was a really enthusiastic noisy friendly Zumba class taking place just outside the reception area of the hostel and all the girls taking part thought it would be a great idea if I joined in, so obviously I did, what fun that was! I didn't ask to see the photos of my participation, what with the heat and my lack of co-ordination it was probably better not to see what I looked like!
Photos of the beach and 'my' lounger, nothing much to photograph today as a beach is a beach is a beach!
